Adult Spirituality

Adult Faith Formation and Spirituality Programs

The Adult Faith Formation and Spirituality Programs at St. Philip Neri offer every adult in the parish the opportunity to consciously grow in the life of Christ through experience, reflection, prayer and study. These programs are designed to build a vibrant and fruitful parish community of mature Disciples of Christ who are equipped to proclaim, witness and share the good news of Jesus Christ among our families, workplaces, social environments and public domains. The programs, in which all adults are encouraged to participate, attempt to bring about a closer relationship in the Parish community as those involved experience and meet Our Lord and Savior. All events are announced in the church bulletin and on the Parish Website. Additional information about the programs at St. Philip Neri may be found at the link provided for the Facebook page of the Adult Spirituality Program.

Adult Faith Formation

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (the “USCCB”) has used the biblical account of the road to Emmaus to promote Adult Faith Formation. The road to Emmaus is a biblical event in which two disciples walked along with another individual who they thought was a stranger. The disciples experienced the presence of Christ and said, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”  (Lk 24: 13-35) The USCCB has used this biblical account as the title of its document, “Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us – A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States.” The document emphasizes adult education as a priority in pastoral ministry and states the importance of using Jesus’ teachings as a model for helping adults to meet Christ.

The three major goals of the plan include: i) invite and enable ongoing conversion to Jesus in the Holiness of Life; ii) promote and support active membership in the Christian Community; and iii) call and prepare adults to act as disciples in a mission to the world.

Spirituality Programs, Retreats and Pilgrimages

The goals and principals set forth in the aforementioned document are addressed through the adult programs offered at St. Philip Neri. The programs include RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation), scriptural studies, special programs, retreats, days of recollection, and Christian pilgrimages.

Throughout the year, special programs are offered to adult parishioners. These programs, which focus on theological teachings and church doctrines, are supported by catechetical and scriptural notations. The methodology consists of instructional DVDs, faith sharing with question and answer sessions, and small group discussion and dialogue.

Retreats and days of recollection provide opportunities for participants to join in community prayer, and devote time to reflection and private devotion. Frequently, a spiritual director is present for private conversations, group talks and the reception of sacraments.

Occasionally, pilgrimages to Catholic shrines, basilicas, cathedrals and other related points of interest are conducted. During past pilgrimages, Church history, architecture and Christian art have become an integral part of the pilgrims’ experience. The pilgrimages are rewarding experiences, with memories of Christian community living and faith stories shared with participants long after the pilgrimages have concluded.

Annual Retreats for Men & Women

Pilgrim Virgin Statue

Christ’s great love for us was shown when he was crucified on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and give us eternal life. He loves us without limit, and offers Himself to us in the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. Can we not give Jesus a few minutes of love and adoration in return? Adoration takes place after the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Fridays continuously through 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays in the Daily Mass Chapel in Room 104 of the Ministry Building. After St. Philip Neri’s new sanctuary is completed in several months, Perpetual Adoration will be offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week! To commit an hour to the Lord, please use the online sign-up sheet that may be found at

Annual Retreats for Men & Women

On an annual basis, St. Philip Neri sponsors Annual Retreat weekends. These retreats, which offer a respite from the stresses of daily life, help individuals to renew their spiritual life, strengthen their relationship with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and spend time with God. They also offer the opportunity for individuals to take time for one’s self, and refuel one’s fire and spirit. The retreats, which typically begin on Friday evening and end on Sunday afternoon, offer a weekend of spirituality and fellowship. There is a nominal cost for the retreats, with scholarships available on an as-needed basis. Additional information will be provided in the church bulletin when appropriate.

Pilgrim Virgin Statue

Every Thursday night, several parishioners make a pilgrimage to the home of another parishioner who has volunteered to host the Pilgrim Virgin Statue for the week. At 7:30 p.m., the Rosary is prayed and petitions are offered along with reflections on each mystery. If participants need a ride to the home of the hosting parishioner, they are asked to meet at St. Philip Neri. Departure for the pilgrimage to the host home, which imitates the Blessed Mother’s travel from home to home, takes place at 7:00 p.m. This is a powerful prayer group, from which many requests have been answered through the intercession of our Mother Mary. Participants extend a welcome to their fellow parishioners to take part in a night of comfort, peace, joy and fellowship. Details are provided weekly in the church bulletin.
